Testosterone is more commonly known as the ’male’ hormone. It’s also produced in small amounts by a woman’s adrenal glands and ovaries. A woman’s testosterone is highest around age 20 and slowly declines and is estimated to be half as high in her 40s.
Testosterone has been implicated as playing an important role for brain function in men– In a new study, post-menopausal women given a testosterone gel applied daily showed a significant improvement in verbal learning and memory; Thus offering a possible avenue for research into memory and aging.
Much of the research on testosterone in women to date has focused on sexual function, but testosterone has shown widespread effects in women, including, it appears, significant effects on cognitive function.
