The hypothalamus is located in the brain– It controls most of the basic functions of life and also produces hormones that control the other structures in the endocrine system. The hypothalamus sits on top of the brain stem, and is the interface between the brain and the rest of the body. Among other things, this brain region controls our automatic response to the world around us, hormone levels, sleep-wake cycles, immunity and reproduction.
A key control in anti-aging has been identified in the hypothalamus. By manipulating this mechanism, researchers have both shortened and lengthened the life span of mice. The discovery reveals that at minimum, this may delay the onset of age-related disease.
