LATEST TESTOSTERONE STUDY FINDS NO HEART ATTACK RISK

Data shows that testosterone therapy for older men in the U.S. has tripled in the last decade.  Some recent studies have shown that use of testosterone is linked with increased risk of heart attack and stroke, causing concern among patients and their families.

Jacques Baillargeon, the lead author of a recently published study,  said that their investigation was motivated by a growing concern, in the U.S. and internationally, that testosterone therapy increases men’s risk for cardiovascular disease, specifically heart attack and stroke and added that there is a large body of evidence that is consistent with the findings of no increased risk of heart attack associated with testosterone use.

The new study involves over 25,000 older men and it found that testosterone therapy does not increase the risk of heart attack in men. The study is conducted by researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.  They examined 25,420 Medicare beneficiaries 66 years or older treated with testosterone for up to 8 years.

The findings of the study are published in the July 2 issue of the Annals of Pharmacotherapy.
