Hypogonadism is a common condition seen through our practice– especially among older men, but often goes undiagnosed and untreated. It can be associated with a number of signs and symptoms that affect health and quality of life, including feelings of low energy and fatigue; decreased sex drive and performance; decreased muscle mass and strength; decreased bone mineral density; and increased body fat, particularly abdominal fat, a putative risk factor for metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.
Numerous studies that have been carried out have established that insulin resistance is associated with low-grade inflammation. There is tremendous interest in the field on the role of chronic inflammation and the various biomarkers that probably are contributing to atherosclerosis (ASVD) and long-term cardiovascular disease. This is a hypothesis that testosterone-replacement therapy will benefit these markers and ultimately help aid with weight loss.
Normalizing serum testosterone in obese hypogonadal men reduced weight loss-waist circumference, blood pressure, and also marked reductions in fasting glucose; These improvements were progressive over the full 5 years of the study.
